It’s the last night of the Summer season so enjoy some much-loved British classics with themes from The Archers, Brideshead Revisited, the well-loved Sailing By, and some romping choral favourites including Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance March No.1 and Parry’s Jerusalem. Jess Gillam, the first ever saxophonist to win the Woodwind Final of BBC Young Musician of the Year in 2016 “has her place in the saxophone hall of fame already” (John Harle) and under the baton of Ian Tracey there’s tunes to waltz to, march, sing and dance. Jess Gillam is the Young Ambassador for the Ulverston International Music Festival. Alongside pianist and Artistic Director Anthony Hewitt, Jess is responsible for personally engaging with hundreds of local school-children through UIMF’s outreach and education programmes.

Hot off her success at the 2016 BBC Young Musician of the Year Competition, Jess will be back again with a concert designed especially for the younger audience. She’ll introduce us to the vibrant world of the saxophone with some funky pieces, chat about her experiences performing on television, and show a few video clips. There’ll even be a bit of audience participation too, concluding with a chance to ask a few questions. Come along to be entertained and amazed at Jess’ extraordinary talent.

Jess presents a programme of varied repertoire ranging from classical arrangements to jazz-favourites, alongside Anthony Hewitt and a string quartet from the Royal Northern College of Music.

Jess Gillam made history in 2016 as the first saxophonist to win the Woodwind Final of BBC Young Musician of the Year, and is fast-gaining international recognition as one of the most exciting young saxophonists of today. She is already in demand as both recitalist and concerto soloist, and upcoming highlights include engagements with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic orchestra and Sinfonia Cymru.

She’ll take you on a journey though music by great English jazz saxophonist Barbara Thompson and American jazz legend Chick Corea alongside contemporary works by Michael Nyman and much loved film composer John William’s Escapades. Then there’s Ravel’s Spanish flavoured Pièce en forme de Habanera and even music from the Italian baroque with Alessandro Marcello’s oboe Concerto given a sublime saxophone twist.

John Harle returns to Ulverston after his spectacular concert in 2015. Featuring new works written for John in his 60th birthday year, the concert is a unique opportunity to hear music by some of the most influential composers of today, by the master of the saxophone at the peak of his powers.

John Harle is an Ivor Novello award-winning saxophonist, composer, and record producer, whose work spans across musical genres from classical to contemporary pop. His early work gained public acclaim with his Saxophone Concertos album on EMI Classics which is widely seen as the definitive recording of the major classical works, and his playing has been the catalyst for an outpouring of new concertos by composers including Sir Harrison Birtwistle, Sir Richard Rodney Bennett, Marc Anthony Turnage, Sir John Tavener, Sally Beamish, Michael Nyman and Gavin Bryars. He has performed with countless orchestras and conductors worldwide and has sold over half a million CDs in the classical field alone.

John is the composer of over 100 film and TV scores, two operas and 50 concert works, including the theme to BBC1’s Silent Witness, and the epic score to Simon Schama’s A History of Britain. He is the recipient of an Ivor Novello award and two Royal Television Society awards for Best Music. He was artistic advisor and producer to Sir Paul McCartney for six years, and other major collaborations have included albums and tours with Elvis Costello and Marc Almond.

A prominent media figure, he is a regular contributor to Radio 4 Front Row, and was a castaway on Desert Island Discs. He also contributes written articles to major publications. He has been musical director and producer for Moondog, Herbie Hancock, Elmer Bernstein, Ute Lemper, Lesley Garrett, Kathryn Tickell, Michael Nyman, Sir John Dankworth and Dame Cleo Laine. In 2017, his epic book, The Saxophone, will be published in major territories, including China.

John will perform with virtuoso pianist Steve Lodder, pianist described as “a musical thinker of erudition and depth” by TheGuardian. StevehasworkedwiththeeliteoftheUK’sjazz musicians, including: Andy Sheppard, John Etheridge, Annie Whitehead, Harry Beckett and Sarah Jane Morris. Internationally Steve has been a member of George Russell’s ‘Living Time Orchestra’ since the early ‘90’s and has toured with Carla Bley, Steve Swallow and Ernestine Anderson. He met with John Harle also in the early ‘90’s and recorded the Shadow of the Duke, and Terror and Magnificence, alongside Elvis Costello. STEVELODDER.COM
