Debussy: Danses sacrée et profane
Milhaud: Scaramouche
Stravinsky: Danses concertantes
Villa Lobos: Fantasia for Soprano Saxophone
Debussy: Sarabande
Milhaud: Le Boeuf Sur le Toit
Another themed concert with its invitation to ‘wear your dancing shoes’ brings us a glorious feast of dance- and jazz-inspired music. Darius Milhaud, although French, was infatuated by the music of Brazil and his Scaramouche for soprano sax and orchestra and hilarious Le Boeuf Sur le Toit (The Bull on the Roof) are laced with the rhythms and tunes of that country. The Brazilian composer Villa-Lobos contributes to the evening with his ‘swinging little piece’ for soprano sax, exuberant in the hands of Ulverston’s star performer, Jess Gillam. Debussy brings a sensuous mood with his Sarabande and Danses Sacrée et Profane while Stravinsky’s Danses Concertantes makes a suitable cool contrast to what has gone before – the perfect appetiser for the interval ice cream!
