11th June 2017: Recital at the Ulverston International Music Festival

Jess presents a programme of varied repertoire ranging from classical arrangements to jazz-favourites, alongside Anthony Hewitt and a string quartet from the Royal Northern College of Music.

Jess Gillam made history in 2016 as the first saxophonist to win the Woodwind Final of BBC Young Musician of the Year, and is fast-gaining international recognition as one of the most exciting young saxophonists of today. She is already in demand as both recitalist and concerto soloist, and upcoming highlights include engagements with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic orchestra and Sinfonia Cymru.

She’ll take you on a journey though music by great English jazz saxophonist Barbara Thompson and American jazz legend Chick Corea alongside contemporary works by Michael Nyman and much loved film composer John William’s Escapades. Then there’s Ravel’s Spanish flavoured Pièce en forme de Habanera and even music from the Italian baroque with Alessandro Marcello’s oboe Concerto given a sublime saxophone twist.

“A true inspiration, she frankly rocks.” Huffington Post Entertainment

“Her stage presence is charismatic, infectiously extrovert, and highly expressive as is her sound which ranged from vibrantly coloured and imaginative to haunting and delicate.” Bachtrack Review
