British saxophonist Jess Gillam can keep up with the records – she was the youngest soloist to date to appear at the renowned BBC Proms. The hip and extremely versatile musician made her debut with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra in October 2022 with film music. Now she returns to play James MacMillan’s Saxophone Concerto. “The three-movement piece is a fantasy of traditional Scottish dances,” wrote the Times, “but that doesn’t begin to capture the tensions and ambiguities of this fascinating work.”
