Munich Philharmonic
Wayne Marshall, conductor
Jess Gillam, saxophone
On his debut with the Munich Philharmonic, the charismatic conductor Wayne Marshall brings together jazz and classical music in a great orchestral sound. Leonard Bernstein described three dances from his musical “On the Town” as “symphonic pieces”, thereby blurring the line between Broadway and concert stages. From several dances from his film and ballet music, Dmitrij Shostakowitsch put together a suite from which the melancholy waltz No. 2 became the audience’s favorite. The British saxophonist Jess Gillam is not only the soloist in Darius Milhaud’s famous »Scaramouche«, but also mingles with the orchestra to play the saxophone parts of the other works.
