Thompson Concerto for three saxophones
Mendelssohn-Bartholdy Symphony No.3 in A minor Op.56 ‘Scottish’
The second piece of the evening will be the extraordinary Concerto for three saxophones and orchestra by the British composer Barbara Thompson (1944-2022). When she founded her band Paraphernalia in 1977, Barbara Thompson was a pioneer as a woman entering the male-dominated world of jazz. However, the quality of her music earned her a place not only in the jazz but also in the musical pantheon. One of her first symphonic works was the Concerto for three saxophones, which you will hear during this evening.
Note: This is a concerto for three saxophones, but NOT for three saxophonists. This is a showpiece work for one musician, who during it changes alto saxophones to tenor and soprano saxophones. This makes it a completely unique composition. But it is also a song full of thrilling energy and seductive lyrical content.
This concert will be performed for you by Jess Gillam, about whom the prestigious Grammophone magazine wrote: “[Jess Gillam] proves the musical instinct that only she can bring to the sound of her instrument”.
