“One of the finest wind ensembles in the world.”
Timothy Reynish

The National Youth Wind Ensemble of Great Britain, conducted by Phillip Scott, is a one-player-per-part wind ensemble of about 40 players which has established an enviable international reputation since its foundation in 1998. The group specialises in the performance of music which has appeared during the last thirty years, although music of earlier eras is also performed.

NYWE regularly commissions important composers, most recently Philip Grange, Joseph Phibbs, Chiu-Yu Chou, Jacques Cohen, Anthony Bailey and Michael Torke. In July 2009, NYWE gave the world premiere of Philip Grange’s Cloud Atlas at the Cheltenham Music Festival, a major work which went on to win a 2010 British Composer Award.

In July, Jess premiered a piece written for her by internationally renowned saxophonist Barbara Thompson entitled “the Sky’s the Limit” at the World Saxophone Congress in Strasbourg. Barbara and her husband Jon Hiseman asked Jess if she would like to make a music video for the piece and they travelled to the Lake District and Jess’ hometown of Ulverston to film the video which will be released in 2016. Jon Hiseman and Asue Azar filmed the video.
Barbara writes – “It is a real treat to write a piece for such a talented young 17-year-old saxophonist, and I hope this will be the first of many collaborations”.

In 2015, Jess was invited to be the first Young Ambassador for the Ulverston International Music Festival. She visited local schools and gave performances and presentations about the Festival. She also gave a solo recital and made a guest appearance with the Will Todd Trio.
Since the inception of the Ulverston International Music Festival in 2004 by acclaimed classical pianist Anthony Hewitt, enthusiastic audiences have been treated to top stars and ensembles of our generation on their doorstep, including Nicola Benedetti, Tasmin Little, Chloe Hanslip, Alina Ibragimova, Steven Isserlis, Natalie Clein, Emma Johnson, Martin Roscoe, Sinfonia Viva and the Northern Sinfonia Orchestra, plus jazz artists Dave Newton, Claire Martin and Benet McLean – all performing diverse programmes in venues all over the town.

Jess will perform a solo recital consisting of mixed classical and jazz repertoire with international concert pianist Anthony Hewitt who is also the director of the Ulverston International Music Festival.

Last year, Jess performed a solo recital to a sold out Coronation Hall and she was also the Young Ambassador for the Festival, visiting local primary schools to perform and make presentations about music and the Festival. She also performed with the acclaimed Will Todd Trio.

Jess will perform “The Celtic” – a concert for soprano saxophone and string orchestra – by Dave Heath with the Lakeland Sinfonia.
“The Society started out as the Kendal Chamber Orchestra, which played in Kendal Parish Church and Kendal Town Hall. The orchestra was renamed the Lakeland Sinfonia, and its series of concerts, augmented by other orchestras, notably the Northern Sinfonia, proved to be very popular. The Society held a gala concert in May 1982 at the opening of the Kendal Leisure Centre, and concerts have been in the Westmorland Hall there ever since.
The BBC Philharmonic came for the first time in 1984, and their concerts were broadcast live on BBC Radio 3. Nowadays the orchestra still records its concerts in the Westmorland Hall for future broadcasting. The Hallé first played for us in 1989.
Many well-known artists have graced our stage, some in the early stages of their careers: Dimitri Alexeev, Imogen Cooper, Emma Johnson, Nigel Kennedy, Julian Lloyd Webber, Christina Ortiz, Maxim Vengerov and Simon Rattle. More recently we have given performing opportunities to Alina Ibragimova, Giovanni Guzzo, Robin Ticciati, Garry Walker, Sam Boden and Elena Urioste, all of whom are now carving out their careers on the international stage.
Over the last three years well-established performers such as Freddy Kempf, Nicola Benedetti, Angela Hewitt, Julian Bliss, Tasmin Little, Andrew Gourlay, Thomas Zehetmair and Sir Mark Elder have all brought great pleasure to our audiences with their expert music-making.
The Lakeland Sinfonia, which is the Society’s own orchestra, plays two of the subscription concerts each season. The players greatly appreciate the opportunity to play with internationally renowned conductors and soloists – such an opportunity is not available elsewhere in the area. The orchestra is managed by Peter Crompton.”
